When our newly adopted son arrived, his social worker handed us his entire life in a single black trash bag — but when I emptied it onto his new bed, the specific item hidden at the very bottom made me turn completely pale.

After three years of endless paperwork, eight-year-old Leo finally stood on our front porch.

His exhausted social worker handed me a standard black trash bag containing his entire life, quickly checked her phone, and drove away.

A few pairs of faded jeans, oversized t-shirts, and a single worn-out stuffed bear tumbled out first.

But as the last of his belongings slipped out of the plastic, something much heavier hit the mattress with a dull, solid thud.

My breath hitched in my throat as I slowly reached out.

And when I recognized exactly what that specific item was, and realized what this quiet eight-year-old boy had secretly brought into our home, the color completely drained from my face. See less
