The rare case behind alarming reports involved something very different: a spoiled coconut contaminated by microorganisms capable of producing a dangerous toxin. The tragedy was not evidence that normal coconut water suddenly becomes poisonous without warning.
In the reported medical case, severe illness developed after water from a spoiled coconut was consumed. Doctors linked the poisoning to 3-nitropropionic acid, a toxin that can be produced when certain fungi contaminate food.
