Although it has an unappealing appearance, Xylaria nigripes (Klotzsch) Cooke—commonly known as O Linh ginseng—holds significant medicinal value. Traditionally used in medicine, this fungus is known for its sedative effects, ability to treat insomnia, stop bleeding, lower blood pressure, and aid in various health conditions.

Additionally, Xylaria nigripes (XN) is believed to enhance memory, protect the brain, and nourish the kidneys. It is particularly beneficial for individuals recovering from surgery, postpartum mothers, and those who are breastfeeding, making it a highly regarded medicinal herb.

Belonging to the Xylariaceae family, XN has long been used in traditional medicine as a remedy for insomnia and trauma, as well as a nerve tonic. Both in vivo and in vitro studies have demonstrated its numerous bioactivities, including antioxidant, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, and anti-tumor properties. It has also been shown to prevent spatial memory impairment, exhibit antidepressant effects in epileptic patients, enhance insulin sensitivity, and provide neuroprotective benefits.

These therapeutic effects are attributed to various bioactive compounds found in XN, such as intracellular and extracellular polysaccharides, adenosine, total polyphenols, and triterpenoids present in its mycelia.

In this study, PC12 cells treated with H₂O₂ were used as a model to investigate the protective effects of XN mycelia extracts, which were obtained through submerged fermentation. The results highlight XN’s potential in safeguarding neural cells against oxidative damage.

The strange shapes can be alarming when they are uncovered in soil or decaying wood, but their appearance is part of the fungus natural growth. Identification should never rely on a photograph alone, because many fungi share dark, fingerlike fruiting bodies. Anyone who finds an unfamiliar specimen should avoid eating it and consult a qualified local expert. Traditional use also does not automatically make a preparation safe for every person.

The research described above focuses largely on laboratory models and extracts rather than ordinary household use. Cell studies can help researchers understand possible mechanisms, including how compounds may affect oxidative stress and mitochondrial function, but they do not establish a dose or prove that the same outcome occurs in people. That distinction matters when a fungus is discussed both as a folk remedy and as a subject of modern research.

For collectors, the safest response is to leave the growth in place until it can be identified. Its ecological role is connected to decomposing organic material, and disturbing an underground cluster can damage more than the visible portion. Researchers remain interested in Xylaria nigripes because its polysaccharides, adenosine, polyphenols, and triterpenoids offer several avenues for further investigation. More clinical evidence is needed before claims about memory, sleep, blood pressure, or other conditions can be translated into medical advice.

Because names and preparations vary by region, the term O Linh ginseng should not be treated as proof of identity. A specimens habitat, microscopic features, and growth pattern may all be needed for dependable identification. The safest next step after an unusual discovery is documentation rather than consumption. Photograph the site, note the type of wood or soil, and contact a mycology group or herbarium. Its value lies not only in its dramatic appearance, but in the continuing effort to understand which compounds are active and whether controlled human studies will confirm benefits suggested by traditional practice and early experiments.
